The DDBIA working for you - Announcing the NEW Program to Support our Businesses Impacted by Increased Crime and Vandalism

The Business Improvement Areas of BC (of which the Downtown Duncan BIA is a strong participant) has been working with government officials to highlight the need for creation of a fund to support initiatives aimed at curtailing the impacts of vandalism and property crime and putting preventative measures in place.  The BC government announced a new $10.5 million “Securing Small Business Rebate Program” that will be available on an application basis and retroactive to January 1, 2023 (see the BIAC press release below).  If your business has been impacted, you can apply for as much as $2,000 per business for the cost of repairs due to vandalism and up to $1,000 for vandalism prevention. More information on when on how to apply for the funding is expected in the fall.  This is great news for our impacted businesses in Downtown Duncan.

Proposed Pedestrian Scramble Crossing Trial at Canada / Ingram

The City of Duncan is implementing a trial Pedestrian Scramble Crossing at the intersection of Canada Avenue and Ingram Street. A Pedestrian Scramble Crossing, also known as a Diagonal Crossing or X-Crossing, is a type of traffic signal movement that temporarily stops all vehicle traffic, from all directions, allowing pedestrians to cross an intersection in every direction, including diagonally, during a dedicated phase that is for pedestrians only. This initiative is being taken to increase pedestrian safety at the Canada / Ingram intersection.

The trial will see partial road markings installed in the intersection and slight adjustments to the signal timings to accommodate the all-directions pedestrian crossings. All of these changes can be reversed with minor costs if the trial program is proven to be not successful. If the initiative is shown to be successful, the partial road markings will be extended across the remainder of the intersection and redone using more permanent paint markings.  Take the short (3 question) Survey by clicking on the link here and give the City your feedback.
